Tripura Govt to provide mustard oil through PDS soon: Minister Sushanta Chowdhury

Moving in line with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to adopt millets as preferred crop choice, the Tripura government is mulling to distribute millets through the Public Distribution System (PDS) soon, said food and civil supplies minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference here at the press corner of the secretariat on Wednesday, minister Sushanta Chowdhury said, “With India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is gearing up with a host of activities to bring millets on the global food map, the food and civil supplies department of our government is mulling to start distributing millets through PDS in ration shops soon.”

The minister also said that the government will soon start distribution of mustard oil through PDS. “The 9 lakh families having ration card will soon get mustard oil at a subsidized rate from the ration shops across the state.”

Meanwhile, the minister informed that the government will soon establish district-wise separate infrastructure of the food and civil supplies department so as to ease the officers and workers.

He said that the department has decided to convert the existing ration cards into smart cards to ease the holders. In addition to this the 2048 ration dealers across the state will be brought under insurance coverage with which the PDS system of the state will be further strengthened, he told reporters.

“Initiative has been taken to launch 'Ration Mitra' in future to ensure that the poor and the sick person can take advantage of the rationing system of the state easily through doorstep delivery of their ration items,” minister said.
