4 convicted to life imprisonment over Bodishatta murder case

The District and Session Court Judge of the West Tripura district on Saturday sentenced 4 persons including a police inspector to life term imprisonment in the sensational bank manager Bodishatta Das murder case that took place in Agartala in the year 2019.

After a long trial, the Court on Friday found the four prime accused – Sumit Banik, Sumit Chowdhury, Soyeb Miah and another Sukanta Biswas guilty.

The public prosecutor Samrat Kar Bhowmik said that the district and sessions judge (west) Subhashish Sharma Roy sentenced all four convicts to rigorous life term imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 for each.

Briefing the incident took place in August 2019, the prosecutor said that the deceased Bodishatta Das was seated with his friend here in Agartala Jackson Gate area at around 11:30 PM, while the 4 convicted persons were urinating in public.  When the victim objected to the nuisance, a physical altercation broke out, ultimately resulting in his brutal murder, he told reporters.

Out of the convicts, one of the accused Sumit Chowdhury is the son of a prominent jeweller, Sumit Banik, a renowned contractor, Sukanta Biswas a service police inspector and Soyeb Miah, a history sheeter with past criminal records.

Meanwhile, the prosecutor Samrat Kar Bhowmik castigated the defence lawyer Pijush Kanti Biswas, where he questioned the judgement of the court on Saturday and termed it ‘illegal’ and ‘bad’ judgement on Friday last when the court found the 4 accused persons guilty and reserved the judgement for Saturday.

“When the matter was sub judice with the court till Friday, how come being a senior lawyer he could make a statement to question the knowledge of a judge?,” he told reporters on Saturday.
