CM announces major overhaul in Aadhaar Card issuance to Curb Illegal Immigration

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a significant change in the process for issuing Aadhaar cards, aiming to strengthen the state’s efforts against illegal immigration. In a move set to tighten scrutiny, the Chief Minister revealed that Aadhaar cards for adult citizens in Assam will soon be issued exclusively through the offices of Deputy Commissioners (DCs), replacing the current system where common service centers and third-party vendors were involved.

This new directive is part of the state government's broader strategy to prevent illegal immigrants from acquiring Aadhaar cards fraudulently. "Very soon, we will implement a decision where Aadhaar cards for adult citizens will be issued only by DCs. This will ensure that no illegal immigrant can obtain an Aadhaar card, and we can track and push them back easily," Sarma stated in a post on the social media platform X.

The Chief Minister emphasized that the move would significantly enhance verification processes and plug the gaps in the existing system, which has previously allowed foreign nationals to gain access to crucial Indian identity documents. Aadhaar, a 12-digit identity number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), serves as both proof of identity and residence in India, and is essential for various government services.

With this policy overhaul, the state aims to create a more controlled and reliable system for Aadhaar issuance, reinforcing security measures and reducing the risk of misuse.

Sarma's administration has been proactive in addressing the concerns of illegal immigration, with the new Aadhaar issuance process being just one of the steps taken to ensure the integrity of the state's identification systems.
