Police arrests two drug peddlers

In a major operation, Tripura Police arrested two drug peddlers and seized six kilograms of cannabis (ganja) and 195 yaba tablets from Dharmanagar’s Durgapur area on Monday mid-night.

Acting on a tip-off police personnel from Dharmanagar police station raided the house of Jamshed Ali (Haroon) (32) resident of Dharmanagar’s Durgapur area. During the raid police found six kilograms of cannabis (ganja) packed in two packets, 195 yaba tablets, Rs 35 thousand cash, two mobile phones and a motor bike bearing number TR 05 C 5143 from his possession. Police arrested Jamshed Ali (Haroon) (32) and his subordinate Babul Uddin (25) resident of North Phulbari area of Churaibari under Churaibari police station for possessing the narcotics substances.

Moreover, the estimated value of the confiscated cannabis (ganja) and yaba tablets in the illicit market amounts to approximately Rs 3 lakh. The seized cannabis (ganja) and yaba tablets were intended for smuggling purposes beyond Tripura's borders, police said.

A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act against the arrested drug peddlers.

However, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has called on Tripura to get rid of drugs. Police are seizing crores worth of heroin, brown sugar, cannabis (ganja) and arresting traffickers, but the real kingpins remain out of reach, which is why the state is not moving towards a drug-free state despite so many anti-drug campaigns.
