On the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Tripura reiterated the state government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating drug abuse and trafficking, declaring a strict zero-tolerance policy towards narcotics.
Speaking at a special awareness program organized by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) – Agartala Zonal Unit, in collaboration with the West Tripura District Administration, at the premises of Umakanta Academy in Agartala on Wednesday, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha emphasized the urgency of combating the growing menace of drug addiction, particularly among the youth. “We have adopted a zero-tolerance approach to drugs. Our government has given full freedom to law enforcement and anti-narcotics agencies to act decisively,” he stated.
However, Dr. Saha stressed that enforcement alone is not enough. He called for collective action involving parents, teachers, community leaders, and the youth. "Addiction is not just a crime; it's a disease. We must tackle it from all sides—legally, socially, and medically,” he said.
The state’s flagship campaign, Nesha Mukt Tripura (Drug-Free Tripura), continues to engage students and communities in awareness drives, while initiatives like Khelo Tripura and Sustha Tripura promote sports and healthy living as positive alternatives for young people.
“As we observe this important day, let us pledge to build a society free from the clutches of addiction—one that protects and empowers its youth,” the Chief Minister concluded.
