Bangladesh: Founder of terror group Jama’atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya arrested, remanded

The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested the founder of the newly founded terror outfit of Bangladesh Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya Shamin Mahfuz alias Manring Morong and his wife from Dhaka last night.

The CTTC also recovered a cache of explosives from them. Shamin Mahfuz along with leaders of three other militant outfits came together to set up the new terror group in 2019.

A Dhaka Court today placed Shamin Mahfuz and his wife Naznin Sultana on a three-day remand in a case lodged under the Anti-terrorism Act, reports. Shamin and his wife were hiding in Bandarban Hills after the joint forces operation began in 2022.

The activities of the Fil Hindal Sharqia group came to light when Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) started investigating the disappearance of 7 youths from Cumilla.

Later more than 50 students were found to be training under the Fil Hindal Sharqia group across Bangladesh.

A large number of the key members of the terror outfit have been arrested since 2022 in various operations across Bangladesh.
