Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will lead a high-level Indian delegation to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers’ meeting, set to begin tomorrow in Qingdao, China. The two-day summit will bring together defence leaders from member countries to discuss pressing issues related to regional and global security.
The agenda for the meeting includes wide-ranging discussions on counter-terrorism, military cooperation, and collaborative efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region. Defence ministers are expected to exchange views on enhancing cooperation among SCO member states' armed forces and strengthening coordination on security-related matters.
During the meeting, Rajnath Singh is likely to reaffirm India’s unwavering commitment to the SCO’s principles and objectives. He is expected to highlight India’s vision for promoting peace, stability, and development in the region, while also calling for collective and sustained efforts to combat terrorism and extremism.
On the sidelines of the summit, the Defence Minister will hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from several participating countries, including China and Russia, to discuss issues of mutual interest and explore opportunities for defence collaboration.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, established in 2001, is a regional intergovernmental organisation aimed at fostering political, economic, and security-related cooperation. India became a full member in 2017. The current SCO membership includes India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and Belarus.
China is chairing the SCO for 2025 under the theme "Upholding the Shanghai Spirit: SCO on the Move." India continues to view the organisation as a key platform for promoting multilateralism, regional security, economic integration, and cultural exchanges.
