Benchmark domestic equity indices today ended with modest losses, extending their losing streak to the third consecutive session. The 30-share index at the Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex, dipped 198 points, or 0.25 percent, to close at 77,860. Similarly, the National Stock Exchange Nifty-50 fell 43 points, or 0.18 percent, to settle at 23,560. The broader market indices at BSE displayed a mixed trend.
The Mid-Cap index added 0.13 percent while the Small-Cap index shed over 0.6 percent. In the Sensex index, 16 out of 30 companies ended in negative territory. In the top laggards, ITC dropped over 2.3 percent, SBI Bank shed two percent, and Adani Ports fell over 1.4 percent. Meanwhile, among the top gainers, Tata Steel rose over 4.3 percent, Bharti Airtel advanced 3.6 percent, and Zomato gained 2.1 percent. In sectoral indices at the BSE, 12 out of 21 sectors ended down.
In top laggards, oil and gas shed over 1.3 percent, FMCG lost 1.25 percent, and energy fell over one percent. Conversely, among top gainers, telecommunications gained over 2.6 percent, metals rose 2.4 percent, and consumer durables increased 1.23 percent. The overall market breadth at the BSE was negative as shares of 2,402 companies declined and 1,520 advanced while 142 remained unchanged. At the National Stock Exchange, 31 companies hit their 52-week high while 69 hit their 52-week low.
