Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Tuesday attended a flood relief and management programme here at Agartala and claimed that the Centre has provided all possible help during the devastating flood in Tripura.
Addressing the programme, the Chief Minister said that following request from the state government, the Centre had sent an inter ministerial team twice to the state to assess the damage caused by the floods. The floods caused damage to properties and infrastructure valued at Rs 15,000 crore, he added.
He said, "To take up immediate restoration works, we have spent Rs 563 from the state's own budget. I am in touch with the Centre to get funds for restoration works. I hope the Centre will provide assistance by maintaining procedure."
Tripura had suffered devastating floods last year, which led to the loss of 38 lives, besides affecting over 17 lakh people. The state government worked round the clock during the time with support from the Centre and various stakeholders to contain its impact, he stated.
Dr Saha further informed, “We have nearly 12 rivers and 11 out of them were flowing beyond the danger level during the floods last year. Six of them crossed the highest water level in the state’s history. While all eight districts were affected, Sepahijala, Gomati, West, South, Khowai districts were the worst hit. Seventeen lakh people were affected. We shifted 4 lakh people to 889 relief camps.”
