Mayor Dipak Majumder to take on CPI-M’s Ratan in Tripura by-poll

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday announced Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder as its candidate for the Ramnagar assembly constituency by-election amid the nomination filing of the opposition CPI-M candidate Ratan Das.

BJP national general secretary Arun Singh made the announcement from Delhi. Mayor Dipak Majumder will contest against the opposition I.N.D.I.A bloc-backed CPI-M candidate and former legislator Ratan Das.

Majumder, 64, was a former Congress leader till he shifted to the BJP before the 2018 assembly election. He earlier contested the 2013 assembly elections from Khowai constituency but was defeated.

The I.N.D.I.A bloc leaders comprising of CPI-M state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury, Congress leaders, including West Parliamentary Constituency candidate Ashish Kumar Saha and former Minister and Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman and others walked on a rally on Friday to escort the candidate Ratan Das for submission of his nomination.

Castigating the ruling BJP government at the Centre, the I.N.D.I.A bloc Tripura convenor Jitendra Chaudhury said that this Lok Sabha election is a crucial opportunity to stand against the ‘fascistic’ government.

Chaudhury described the Lok Sabha election as a critical juncture to dislodge the BJP from power.
