Bru migrants casts vote in Tripura for the first time after two decades


The Bru families migrated from Mizoram to Tripura and enrolled in the electoral roll in the state of Tripura on Thursday casts their votes for the first time after two decades for the state assembly election on Thursday.

At least 13, 949 people from the newly settled Bru Community were enrolled in the electoral roll. The tribals are settled in 12 locations in four districts of Tripura.

The migrants came out in large numbers at the Haduklaupara polling booth in 47 Ambassa Assembly Constituency in Tripura’s Dhalai district, the Election Commission said.

“Bru migrant voters are able to exercise their franchise after many years due to rehabilitation and registration of voters in Tripura,” the commission said.

The CEO of the state election commission on Thursday noon said, “These elections are very inclusive. We have been able to register large number of female voters, especially those who are newly married. The Bru migrants who have come from Mizoram have been enrolled in the electoral roll of Tripura, third gender, the tea garden workers, the brick kiln workers. So we have had a very record inclusion in the voter lists this year.”

However, as the voting for 60-member assembly in Tripura is underway amid tight security, the state on Thursday recorded 51.42% voter turnout till 1 pm.
