Bangladesh: COVID positivity rate over 31 percent


The COVID 19 pandemic continued to show an upward trend in Bangladesh with the sample positivity rate reaching 31.29 percent on Sunday. According to the latest bulletin of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 14 deaths and 10,906 new cases of coronavirus were reported from the country over the last 24 hours on Sunday. The country has reported over 30 percent positivity for the first time since July last year.

Some places like Chattogram reported an even higher positivity rate of 38.64 percent. Meanwhile, the DGHS has said that the Omicron variant is gradually replacing the Delta variant through community transmission in Bangladesh. It said that the COVID infection started rising in Bangladesh again from the end of December leading to rising number of patients in the hospital. Bangladesh Secretariat has banned visitors entry into the premises in view of the resign cases of COVID 19 in the country.

The government has already closed the educational institutions for two weeks upto February 6.  Out of a total population of over 16 crore in Bangladesh, more than 9.36 crore people have received the first dose of vaccine, while 5.83 crore people have received both the doses. In terms of total population it constitutes 54.84 percent for the first dose and 34.27 percent of the population as per DGHS data. More than 10.37 lakh people have received the booster doses till Saturday.
