In a major crackdown on illegal trade, the Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Mizoram Police and the state’s Excise and Narcotics Department, seized contraband worth over ₹1.44 crore and arrested 11 individuals during a series of operations conducted across Mizoram in the past 24 hours.
In the first major operation, acting on specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement of foreign cigars, a joint Area Domination Patrol (ADP) was launched in the Tlangpuikawn area of Siaha district. The patrol team intercepted four vehicles and recovered 83 cartons of foreign cigars, identified as Burmese Cheroots. The seized consignment is estimated to be worth ₹62.25 lakh. Four individuals, aged between 20 and 27, were taken into custody in connection with the seizure.
In a separate operation, Assam Rifles personnel, along with officials from the Excise and Narcotics Department, set up a check post along the New Dawn to Hnahthial road, also in Siaha district. During the operation, four individuals — including two women — were apprehended with 109.08 grams of heroin. The heroin is estimated to have a market value of ₹81.81 lakh.
Meanwhile, in Lunglei district, the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police carried out another joint operation in the Chawngte area. The team recovered 373 packets of locally brewed alcohol, amounting to approximately 124 litres. The estimated value of the seized liquor is ₹93,250. Three individuals were arrested in this operation.
All 11 accused, along with the seized contraband, have been handed over to the respective police stations for further legal proceedings.
