2-day international seminar on Raja Ram Mohan Roy held


Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Friday inaugurated two days long international seminar on Indian reformer Raja Ram Mohan Roy here at Agartala Pragna Bhawan and said that Raja Ram Mohan Roy played a crucial role in educational reforms in the country besides organizing various social movements for the purpose of social reform.

Sponsored by the Raja Ram Mohan Roy Library Foundation of the Union Ministry, the international seminar was organised by the Birchandra State Central Library of the department of higher education of Tripura government.

Underlining the role and contribution of the father of Indian renaissance Raj Ram Mohan Roy, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said that Rammohan Roy insisted on incorporating the teachings of monotheistic doctrine into the modern and western culture.

“Even in the internet era, books have immense importance. One of the ways to discover yourself is to read books. And the library is the main resource for reading books,” he said, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has attempted to revive the library system by modernizing it.

On the other hand, the Director General of the National Library of Kolkata Ajay Pratap Singh said that Raja Rammohan Roy had done many social movements with the aim of giving social status to women. Among these, his movement against cruel social customs like sati-immolation was one of them. His contribution to education reform at that time was also undeniable.
