Century-old Ker Puja celebrated with full devotion

The Century-old traditional Ker Puja is celebrated in the premises of Royal Palace in Agartala on Tuesday with full devotion.

Ker is considered the guardian deity of Vastu Devata is of the state of Tripura from the Royal Period.

A large piece of bamboo bent in a particular fashion assumes the image of Ker and is fast rotated to produce a sound.

The 'chantais', or head priest, regarded as the king on the occasion performed the puja in the royal palace as per the tradition with all rituals.

The area in and around the royal Ujjayanta palace here as well as Puran Habeli, the erstwhile capital of Tripura, around 12 km east of this city, are notified for Ker Puja.

The puja rituals are carried out at government expense as the Tripura government has been holding good its promise to the state's erstwhile royal family for over six decades to organise the puja.

Tripura police personnel fire guns before the beginning of the rituals and at the end of it. Ker Puja was initiated to safeguard the people from diseases, destitution, and external aggression.
