UIDAI deactivates 1.17 Crore Aadhaar Numbers of Deceased Individuals

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has taken significant steps to maintain the integrity and accuracy of the Aadhaar database by deactivating the Aadhaar numbers of deceased individuals. In collaboration with the Registrar General of India (RGI), UIDAI has successfully accessed 1.55 crore death records from 24 states and Union Territories, using the Civil Registration System (CRS), to update its database.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, UIDAI has already deactivated approximately 1.17 crore Aadhaar numbers following a thorough validation process. The exercise is ongoing in non-CRS states and Union Territories, with 6.7 lakh death records received so far, and deactivation procedures are currently underway.

In addition to this, UIDAI has introduced a new service on the My Aadhaar portal called "Reporting of Death of a Family Member." This service is available to individuals in the 24 states and Union Territories that are currently integrated with the Civil Registration System. The service allows users to report the death of a family member, ensuring that the Aadhaar system remains up to date.

UIDAI is also exploring other potential sources for death records, including banks and other entities within the Aadhaar ecosystem. Furthermore, the authority has sought the support of state governments to help identify and remove deceased Aadhaar holders from the system.
