Mizoram, Tripura, and Nagaland Districts Lead in NITI Aayog’s North-East SDG Index 2023-24
Jul 08, 2025
Districts from Mizoram, Tripura, and Nagaland have emerged as the top performers in the second edition of the North Eastern Region (NER) District SDG Index 2023-24, released by NITI Aayog on Monday.
Among the 131 districts evaluated across eight northeastern states, Hnahthial and Champhai from Mizoram, Gomati and West Tripura from Tripura, and Mokokchung from Nagaland ranked as the top five in terms of progress toward the United Nations-mandated Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The NER District SDG Index is a comprehensive tool that assesses district-level progress on 15 of the 17 SDGs using 84 indicators. These include critical areas such as poverty eradication, hunger reduction, health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, access to clean energy, sustainable economic growth, infrastructure development, and responsible consumption.
The index covered 92 percent of districts (131 out of 143) across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim.
NITI Aayog stated that the index aims to promote data-driven governance, encourage healthy competition among districts, and assist state governments in tracking progress, identifying gaps, and prioritizing interventions.
The strong performance of the top-ranking districts highlights significant strides in grassroots development and offers a roadmap for other districts to emulate. With the 2030 deadline for the SDGs fast approaching, such localized assessments are vital for accelerating inclusive and sustainable growth in the region.
