In a major crackdown on cross-border drug trafficking, Assam Rifles personnel have seized methamphetamine tablets valued at over ₹112 crore in Mizoram’s Champhai district, close to the Indo-Myanmar border.
According to an official statement released on Saturday, the seizure was made during an area domination patrol conducted on Friday in Zokhawthar village, a known transit hub for narcotics smuggling. Troops on patrol noticed two individuals carrying rucksacks near the Tiau River, which serves as the boundary between India and Myanmar.
Upon intercepting the suspects and searching their belongings, the troops discovered approximately 3.33 lakh tablets of methamphetamine, commonly known as ‘meth’ or ‘party drugs’. However, the two individuals managed to evade arrest by jumping into the river and fleeing across to the Myanmar side.
Assam Rifles officials stated that the consignment was likely destined for distribution in Champhai town and surrounding areas, which have witnessed a rise in drug-related incidents in recent years due to their proximity to international smuggling routes.
This seizure underscores the ongoing efforts of security forces to curb the influx of illegal drugs through India's northeastern borders, particularly in regions vulnerable to cross-border trafficking.
