AR foils major smuggling attempt; Illegal cigarettes worth Rs 5.1 crore seized

In a significant crackdown on cross-border smuggling, the Assam Rifles seized a large consignment of banned foreign cigarettes worth approximately Rs 5.1 crore near Chandrapur in Agartala, Tripura.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the Assam Rifles launched a well-coordinated operation in the general area of Chandrapur, close to the Indo-Bangladesh border. During the operation, troops intercepted and confiscated 170 cartons of illegal foreign-manufactured cigarettes being smuggled into the region.

The seized contraband was subsequently handed over to officials from the Customs Department for further investigation and legal action.

This operation highlights the Assam Rifles' ongoing commitment to curbing illegal cross-border activities and safeguarding India’s economic and security interests. The force has been maintaining heightened vigilance along the Indo-Bangladesh border, a known hotspot for smuggling networks.

A senior official from Assam Rifles stated, “This seizure not only reflects our operational efficiency but also sends a strong message to smuggling syndicates operating in the region.”

The Customs Department is currently conducting a detailed probe to identify those involved and trace the smuggling network behind the operation.
