World No Tobacco Day observed in Agartala

A walk-a-thon was organized by ILS-CBCC cancer hospital, Agartala in association with Voluntary Health Association of Tripura to observe World No Tobacco Day here on Wednesday. The walk-a-thon started in-front of the Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan.

Speaking to the reporters Agartala Press Club President Jayanta  Bhattacharya  said this year the theme for World No Tobacco Day is “We need food, not tobacco”. The 2023 global campaign aims to raise awareness about alternative crop production and marketing opportunities for tobacco farmers and encourage them to grow sustainable, nutritious crops. It will also aim to expose the tobacco industry’s efforts to interfere with attempts to substitute tobacco growing with sustainable crops, thereby contributing to the global food crisis, he added.

Every year May 31st is observed as World No Tobacco Day to raise awareness about tobacco-related diseases and their impact on the overall population. As per recent estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), India accounts for nearly 1.35 million every year and is the second largest producer and consumer of tobacco.

ILS Hospital doctors and others were present in the walk-a-thon.
