Russia launches largest aerial assault of War, Ukraine confirms

Russia launched its most intense aerial assault on Ukraine overnight, in what Ukrainian officials have called the largest single attack since the full-scale invasion began more than three years ago. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia fired a staggering 550 drones and missiles, targeting multiple regions, including the capital city of Kyiv.

“This is the largest number that the enemy has used in a single attack,” said a spokesperson for Ukraine’s Air Force on Friday. “Our air defense systems were stretched to the limit.”

The majority of the weapons were Iranian-made Shahed kamikaze drones, accompanied by at least 11 cruise and ballistic missiles. While Ukraine's air defense forces managed to intercept a large portion of the projectiles, several penetrated the defenses, causing widespread damage.

According to emergency services, at least 23 civilians were injured in Kyiv. The barrage damaged residential buildings, set off fires, and disrupted transportation infrastructure, including rail lines. Explosions were heard throughout the night, and large swaths of the city were left without power or communications for several hours.

This latest attack surpasses the previous record of 537 aerial weapons, launched just days earlier on June 29, which killed a Ukrainian fighter pilot and damaged military infrastructure.
