Tripura police holds awareness programme on implementation of new criminal laws


The Tripura police on Monday organized an awareness program on implementation of new criminal laws Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) here in Agartala.

Addressing in the programme SP West Tripura Dr Kiran Kumar said "Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam came to effect from July 1. This marks a big change and now the laws of British colonism era were evolved and changed according to victim sanctity. Major changes like transparency, victim compensation, witness protection programmes were brought. Special benefits were also given to the police." "Under Section 107, the cheating money should be refunded to help victims regarding registration of cases through zero FIR, while in every 90 days, they should get information about the update of their cases. In every stage, a timeline for justice will be given, he added.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has replaced the Indian Penal Code-1860, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita has replaced the Code of Criminal Procedure-1973 and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhinivam has replaced the Indian Evidence Act 1872.

Further highlighting the aspects of the new laws the he said, as per Section 173 of the new criminal law, a citizen can now lodge an FIR in any police station other than the stipulated jurisdiction. The new law also has provision of e-FIR, he added.

As per Section-530 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (ENSS), all trials, Investigation and proceedings can be done in electronic mode. Electronic remote representation of witness has been given credence under the new law, he said, adding that the electronic statements will be considered as effective as written statements.
