Oppositions walk out during budget speech; 5 MLAs suspended from assembly for disrupting session

The first day of the monsoon assembly session on Friday witnessed mayhem after the opposition MLAs including the TIPRA Motha MLAs, who sought action against BJP MLA Jadab Lal Nath for watching porn on his mobile phone during the last assembly session were suspended by the speaker Bishwabandhu Sen.

The leader of opposition Animesh Debbarma in the beginning of the assembly session on Friday inquired about the status of his adjournment motion seeking action against Nath, but the speaker of the assembly Bishwabandhu Sen refused to allow the opposition MLAs to speak and instead directed the state finance minister Pranajit Singha Roy to present the budget of 2023-24 financial year.

Following this, the opposition leaders descended into the well of the House along with all 27 opposition legislators and raised slogans seeking action against Nath and continued it for 40 minutes while the minister was presenting the budget.

Meanwhile, the three MLAs of the TIPRA Motha – Nandita Reang, Brishaketu Debbarma and Ranjit Debbarma climbed on a table in the house and continued agitating. In view of this the Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha requested the speaker to suspend them and other 2 MLAs including senior party leader of the congress – Sudip Roy Barman from the session for disturbing and undermining the decorum of the House during the budget session.

Consequently, Speaker Sen suspended Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman, three Tipra Motha MLAs Birshaketu Debbarma, Ranjit Debbarma and Nandita Reang and CPM MLA Nayan Sarkar from the day’s business.

Protesting the decision, the entire opposition walked out of the House except two Congress MLAs who later left the House when the speaker refused to withdraw his ruling.
