Kharchi Puja preparations in full swing in Tripura
Jun 19, 2025
Preparations are in full swing for the week-long Kharchi Puja festival, set to begin on July 3 at the Chaturdasha Devta temple in Khayerpur, on the outskirts of Agartala. This vibrant and deeply rooted traditional celebration draws thousands of devotees from across the country each year.
Kharchi Puja, a major cultural and religious event in Tripura, revolves around the worship of the Chaturdasha Devata—fourteen ancestral deities of the Tripuri people. The royal priest Chantai, a hereditary position, performs the rituals. The deities worshipped include Hara, Uma, Hari, Maa, Bani, Kumar, Ganesh, Brahma, Prithi, Ganga, Abdi, Kamesh, and Himadri.
The name ‘Kharchi’ is derived from the Tripuri words 'khar' (sin) and 'chi' (cleaning), signifying a ritualistic cleansing of sins. It also reflects an agrarian tribute to Mother Earth for her life-sustaining resources.
As in previous years, government departments will set up exhibition stalls to inform the public about various welfare and development schemes. The Information and Cultural Affairs Department will organize daily cultural programs, showcasing performances by renowned local artists. A grand fair will also accompany the celebrations.
Kharchi Puja remains one of the most cherished traditions in Tripura, blending spiritual devotion, cultural pride, and communal harmony.
