Tension gripped along Agartala VIP road after BJP workers protest alleged killing of senior party worker


A large number of BJP workers and supporters of Barjala assembly constituency blocked the VIP road here at Agartala Gurkhabosti on Monday afternoon after a senior party worker succumbed to his injury due to post-poll violence.

The 70-years old BJP worker of Barjala assembly constituency Tapan Bhowmik was attacked on May 2 on the day of declaration of poll result allegedly by a group of miscreants while he was returning to his residence from Umakanta ground. He sustained severe injuries on his head and other parts of his body and later on Monday he succumbed to the injuries here at Agartala GBP Hospital.

Former MLA of Barjala assembly constituency Dr. Dilip Das accompanied by the former Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Verma along with a large contingent of police rushed to Gurkhabosti on Monday while the party workers were blocking the VIP road.

Both the former MLAs of the party condemned the incident and gave 48-hours of ultimatum to the police to arrest the FIR named accused persons. Police had already booked two persons in connection with the attack on the party worker Tapan Bhowmik. They were identified as Narayan Debnath and his son Atanu Debnath.

“Police assured of getting the remaining FIR named accused persons booked within 48 hours of our ultimatum,” said former MLA Dr. Dilip Das.

Meanwhile, the former Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Verma also condemned the incident and held the opposition CPI(M) party responsible for the incident of attack on his party worker. He said, “Hatching political hatred and violence is the culture of the CPI(M) party. Such an incident is highly condemnable and unacceptable.”
