Sikkim is set to host a B20 or Business20 meeting under India’s G20 presidency tomorrow in Gangtok. Chief Minister PS Tamang today said the G20 events scheduled in Gangtok offer a golden opportunity for Sikkim to showcase its economic potential in green investments, organic farming, tourism, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy and hospitality sectors. Addressing a press conference at Samman Bhawan in Gangtok today, Mr. Tamang said that the G20 events will provide a platform to Sikkimese entrepreneurs to explore opportunities outside the State.

He expressed hope that the meetings will increase foreign tourist footfall in Sikkim, with tourism being a core industry. Mr Tamang informed that there will be a focus on organic farming, including the production and marketing of millets. Mr. Tamang thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for allocating two G20 events to Sikkim. State Tourism Minister BS Panth, Sikkim Chief Secretary VB Pathak and officials from the Confederation of Indian Industry were also present.

Sikkim will host the third of four Business20 or B20 events scheduled in the Northeast under India’s G20 presidency tomorrow. B20 is the official G20 dialogue forum with the global business community and among the most prominent engagement groups of the G20. Among other sectors, the State’s vibrant organic farming will be prominently showcased to the world through the B20 event. Startup20 events are scheduled on the 18th and 19th of March in Gangtok.

Delegates from various G20 nations have begun arriving in Sikkim today to participate in the B20 meeting. Around 31 delegates arrived at Pakyong airport near Gangtok today and were received by various departmental secretaries. 15 Sikkimese ethnic groups performed a grand customary welcome at the airport. Other delegates and dignitaries are also arriving via road. For Sikkim, B20 will offer an opportunity to highlight the economic potential and pave the way for partnerships with business communities from G20 countries.
