Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha Sunday flagged off 16 road safety vehicles here at Agartala and pitched for more public awareness to control road accidents in the state. He urged upon the vehicle drivers, passengers and pedestrians to abide the traffic and road safety rules.
The state transport department on Sunday organised a road safety event here at Agartala Swami Vivekananda Ground, where the Chief Minister flagged off the 16 road safety vehicles, unveiled 2 road safety booklets, inaugurated women driving training and distributed helmets among the journalists.
Addressing the event, the Chief Minister Dr Saha said that road accidents can be reduced to a great extent if public awareness about traffic rules and road safety is properly implemented. He said that presently 787203 vehicles are registered in Tripura and out of this, 556519 are two-wheelers. Various steps have been taken by the transport department to regulate these vehicles properly and reduce road accidents, he said.
Meanwhile, the state transport minister Sushanta Chowdhury addressed the gathering in the event and said that the initiative of flagging off 16 road safety vehicles was taken to increase public awareness to prevent road accidents among people through proper infrastructure. He said many people are dying prematurely due to road accidents. As a result, many families are affected.
Most of the road accidents happen mainly due to lack of public awareness, he said, adding that the importance has been laid on the use of modern technology to increase public awareness and reduce the number of accidents.
Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation and MLA Deepak Majumder, Director General of State Police Amitabh Ranjan, Transport Department Secretary C K Jamatia, DGP (Intelligence) Anurag, and others were present in the programme.
