Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid heartfelt tributes to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on the occasion of his martyrdom day, lauding his unwavering commitment to the nation’s unity and integrity.
In a post shared on social media, Prime Minister Modi hailed Dr. Mookerjee’s contributions to nation-building and remembered him as a visionary leader who displayed exceptional courage during a crucial period in India’s history.
“Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee displayed incomparable courage and effort to keep the country’s integrity intact. His invaluable contribution to nation-building will always be remembered with reverence,” the Prime Minister said.
Dr. Mookerjee, a prominent statesman, educationist, and the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh — the ideological predecessor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) — is remembered for his strong opposition to Article 370 and his advocacy for the full integration of Jammu and Kashmir into the Indian Union.
He died in 1953 under controversial circumstances while in custody in Kashmir, and is widely regarded as a martyr who laid down his life for the cause of national unity.
