Tripura Assembly Poll: Left to contest on 47 seats; leaves 13 for Congress

Ending the speculation over the seat sharing strategy of Left and Congress party, both the parties resolved to take the Left parties contest in a total of 47 seats, leaving 13 for the Congress party.

Earlier on the last day of the filing of nomination papers on January 30, the Congress party fielded candidates to submit nomination papers for 3 seats in addition to the 13 while the Left parties fielded candidates for submission of nomination from 13 seats.

However, with the withdrawal of nominations allowed till Thursday, 13 candidates from the Left parties and three candidates of Congress, who earlier announced to contest jointly the Feb 16 elections to 60-member Tripura assembly withdrew their candidates fielded against each other.

In a statement from the Tripura Pradesh Congress president Brijit Sinha issued on Thursday mentioned that, “Congress has withdrawn candidates from 3 extra seats and CPI(M) from 13 seats.”

“To uproot the BJP-IPFT coalition government, restore democracy and establish rule of law in the state, both Congress and the Left Front have forged the seat sharing agreement with dignity”, Sinha mentioned in his statement.
