Arjun Erigaisi becomes first semifinalist at freestyle Chess Grand Slam in Las Vegas


Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi has made a significant breakthrough at the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam in Las Vegas, becoming the first player to secure a place in the semifinals of the prestigious event. The 21-year-old defeated Uzbekistan’s Grandmaster Nodirbek Abdusattorov with an impressive 1.5–0.5 score in their quarterfinal match.

The encounter began with a tightly contested first classical game. Erigaisi pressed hard and came close to claiming victory, but Abdusattorov showcased resilient defensive skills to hold the game to a draw. In the second game, however, the balance quickly tipped in Arjun’s favor. After an early and questionable material sacrifice by Abdusattorov, the Indian grandmaster seized the initiative and maintained control throughout. He steadily converted his advantage into a full point, sealing the match.

With this victory, Erigaisi advances to the semifinals and continues his pursuit of the championship title. The Freestyle Chess Grand Slam, known for its innovative format and elite competition, has attracted top talent from around the globe. Arjun’s performance so far highlights his growing stature on the international chess scene.
