AI Can transform millions of lives by Improving Health, Education, Agriculture: PM Modi


Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday emphasised the transformative power of artificial intelligence while underscoring the need for ethical governance and inclusive development. Mr. Modi was speaking at the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Action Summit at the Grand Palais in Paris. He is co-chairing the summit with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Expressing gratitude to President Macron for hosting the summit and inviting him as co-chair, Prime Minister Modi highlighted AI’s far-reaching impact on the economy, security, and society. He stressed that AI is developing at an unprecedented pace and that a collective global effort is needed to ensure responsible AI governance. He said India has successfully built a digital public infrastructure for over 1.4 billion people at a very low cost. It is built around an open and accessible network and has regulations and a wide range of applications to modernize the country’s economy, reform governance, and transform the lives of its people.

Mr. Modi said governance is not just about managing rifts and rivalries; it is also about promoting innovation and deploying it for the global good. He suggested that the world must think deeply and discuss openly about innovation and governance. He asserted that governance is also about ensuring access for all, especially in the Global South. He added that AI can help transform millions of lives by improving health, education, agriculture, and so much more.

Prime Minister Modi called for addressing concerns related to cybersecurity, disinformation, and deepfakes. He said we must also ensure that technology is rooted in local ecosystems for it to be effective and useful. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that India is developing AI applications for the public good. Mr. Modi highlighted that India is leading in AI adoption and techno-legal solutions on data privacy. Mr. Modi stressed the need to invest in skilling and re-skilling people for an AI-driven future.

The Prime Minister noted that AI is developing at an unprecedented scale and speed and is being adopted and deployed even faster. He also called for collective global efforts to establish governance and standards that uphold shared values, address risks, and build trust. Prime Minister Modi drove home the point that AI is writing the code for humanity in this century.
