India, Ghana elevate ties to comprehensive partnership


India and Ghana have elevated their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership, marking a new chapter in diplomatic and strategic cooperation between the two nations. The announcement came following high-level talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama during Mr. Modi’s official visit to Accra.

On the second and final day of his visit, Prime Minister Modi addressed the Parliament of Ghana, highlighting the growing ties between the two countries and India’s commitment to supporting Africa’s development.

Earlier, the two leaders held delegation-level talks, focusing on expanding cooperation in key areas including trade and investment, agriculture, digital technology, infrastructure development, capacity building, and people-to-people exchanges. Discussions also touched upon enhanced collaboration in defence and security.

To formalize this cooperation, both sides signed four Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering: Cultural exchange, Standardization and quality assurance, Promotion of Ayurveda and traditional medicine, Establishment of a joint commission mechanism.

The leaders welcomed the steady growth of bilateral trade and increasing Indian investments in Ghana, particularly in energy, pharmaceuticals, and infrastructure.

Prime Minister Modi also paid homage to Ghana’s founding father, Kwame Nkrumah, by visiting the Nkrumah Memorial – the historic site where Ghana’s independence was declared.

In a special ceremony, President Mahama conferred upon Prime Minister Modi one of Ghana’s highest civilian honours – the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana – in recognition of his distinguished statesmanship and influential global leadership.

Later in the day, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to interact with members of the Indian diaspora in Accra, underscoring the strong cultural and historical ties between the peoples of both nations.

This landmark visit is expected to significantly deepen India’s engagement with West Africa and strengthen South-South cooperation.
