Tripura Poll: BJP’s ally IPFT held talks with TIPRA Motha over poll alliance

In yet another political development ahead of the assembly elections in Tripura, the ruling BJP party’s alliance partner IPFT on Sunday held talks with the TIPRA Motha regional political party ruling in TTAADC over electoral alliance in Guwahati.

The meeting came up in response to the invitation of TIPRA Motha chief Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barma. “I propose to unite IPFT and TIPRA in any form for solving the question of survivability and existence of the Tiprasas with an endeavour of achieving our demand for "Tipraland' State or 'Greater Tipraland' State,” Prayot’s earlier letter to IPFT stated.

The IPFT had merged with the BJP party before the 2018 assembly election in Tripura based on their demand for ‘Tipra Land’. The demand went much broader with the TIPRA Motha demanding for ‘Greater Tipra Land’.

IPFT chief Prem Kumar Rean led the merger talks with the TIPRA Motha in Guwahati and expressed concern over the non-fulfillment of their demand for a separate state. He said, “Since 2018 the IPFT has been fighting for the demand of separate state, but till now the demand has not been fulfilled by the BJP leaderships as was assured.”

Pradyot said, “Fundamentally, there is not much basic difference between our demand for "Tipraland' State and 'Greater Tipraland' State. Our demand is not different but it's the same, which seeks a permanent constitutional solution for the indigenous people of the state. And we cannot have a consideration of any other issues sacrificing the Tiprasas' existence.”
