General Elections in Pakistan to be held on February 8th next year, after much delay

General Elections in Pakistan will be held on February 8th next year, after much delay. The President of Pakistan Arif Alvi on Thursday announced the date after deliberations with the Chief Election Commissioner, the Attorney General and four members of the Election Commission. The meeting was held after the Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered the Election Commission to consult the President on the poll date.

A caretaker government has been running Pakistan since parliament was dissolved on August 9th this year. Polls were supposed to have taken place within 90 days of the parliament’s dissolution, but the ECP said it needed time to redraw constituency boundaries after the latest census.

A delimitation exercise will take place, before the elections. The Election Commission counsel, Sajeel Swati, said the process of drawing constituencies would be completed by January 29th 2024, paving the way for the polls.
