Asian Games: India’s Tajinderpal Singh Toor & Avinash Mukund Sable clinch 2 gold medals, India's Medal tally reaches 45
Oct 01, 2023The Asian Games 2023 has entered its 8th day at Hangzhou, China. The Indian contingent has so far bagged 45 medals- 13 gold, 16 silver and 16 bronze so far. The country currently stands at the 4th position in the medals tally. In men’s shot put, India’s Tajinderpal Singh Toor won gold today. He registered an impressive throw of 20.36m. This is India’s second medal in a track and field event at Hangzhou.
India received its first gold in track and field athletics as Avinash Mukund Sable made the country proud by winning the gold medal in men’s 3000m steeplechase. Sable also set a new world record with a timing of 8:19:50s. Others who achieved the top honors for India today were ace shooter Kynan Darius Chenai and boxer, Nikhat Zareen.
In the men’s individual trap final, Chenai managed to score 32 points, securing bronze for the country. Earlier in the day, Chenai, Joravar Singh Sandhu and Prithviraj Tondaiman scored 361 points in the men's team trap event and won the gold medal. India also won the silver medal in the women's trap team event, courtesy of Rajeshwari Kumari, Manisha Keer and Preeti Rajak. With this, India's shooting campaign concluded today. The country gained a record breaking 22 medals in shooting, the most by Indian shooters in an Asian Games edition. Nikhat Zareen lost the semifinal boxing bout against Thailand's Chuthamat Raksat in the women's 50kg semi-final. She gave tough competition to the Thai champion. The match was won by a split verdict and Zareen had to settle for a bronze.
In the women's individual golf event, Aditi Ashok bagged the silver medal. She is the first-ever Indian women golfer to win a medal at the Asian Games. Indian boxer Parveen Hooda beat Uzbekistan's Sitora Turdibekova 5-0 on points in the women's 57kg quarter-final. The victory assured Parveen a medal at Hangzhou while India secured an Olympic quota in the category for Paris 2024. Parveen Hooda will now fight in the semi-final on Wednesday, October 4. Meanwhile, Soniya Devi Phairembam clocked 2:16.435 in the women's kayak single 500-meter semi-final and advanced into the final.
