BJP MLA Diba Chandra Hrangkhawl tenders resignation; to join Congress ahead of poll

Senior leader and BJP MLA Diba Chandra Hrangkhawl became the eighth legislator of the ruling coalition in Tripura to resign from the Assembly on Wednesday ahead of the ensuing election.

Senior Congress leader and ex-MLA Ashish Saha, Congress youth leader Baptu Chakraborty and party spokesperson Prashanta Bhattacharya accompanied Hrangkhawl as he went to submit his resignation.

“Today I have tendered my resignation as an MLA to the secretary of the assembly as speaker Ratan Chakraborty was not present. I have resigned on personal grounds,” Hrangkhawl told reporters. Asked if he would be returning to the Congress, Hrangkhawl said: “You will know when I take the decision. But that’s not for today.”

Meanwhile, reacting on the resignation of MLA Diba Chandra Hrangkhawl, minister Sushanta Chowdhury said, “His resignation will not put any impact on the party. He as an MLA of the BJP had not performed well neither in the assembly nor outside the assembly.”

“Despite all odd, the BJP had paid him much respect and even made him advisory committee chairman, but he always talked against the BJP being in the party,” he told reporters.
