India continued its strong run at the FIDE Women’s World Cup as R. Vaishali and Harika Dronavalli advanced to the pre-quarterfinals after hard-fought victories in their respective third-round tie-break matches.
Vaishali secured her spot by defeating USA’s Carissa Yip in the 10+10 rapid tie-breaks after their classical and earlier rapid games ended in draws. The Chennai-based Grandmaster will next face Kazakhstan’s Meruert Kamalidenova, who caused a major upset by knocking out defending champion Aleksandra Goryachkina of Russia.
Harika also made it through a tense tie-break battle, overcoming Greece’s Stavroula Tsolakidou. The experienced Indian star will now meet Russia’s Kateryna Lagno in the Round of 16.
However, it was the end of the road for Vantika Agarwal, who put up a valiant fight against Lagno. Agarwal won the first classical game, but the Russian bounced back to level the match and eventually clinched the final rapid tie-breaker.
Meanwhile, two other Indian players, Koneru Humpy and Divya Deshmukh, had already booked their places in the pre-quarters. Deshmukh defeated Croatia’s Teodora Injac and will now face China’s Zhu Jiner. Humpy, who got past Poland’s Klaudia Kulon, is set to take on Switzerland’s Alexandra Kosteniuk in her next match.
