US President Donald Trump Signals Trade Deal Similar to US-Indonesia Agreement with India

US President Donald Trump has revealed that India is working on a trade deal similar to the one recently signed between the United States and Indonesia. Under the US-Indonesia agreement, US goods can enter Indonesia tariff-free, while Indonesian exports to the US face a 19% tariff. According to Trump, India is seeking a similar arrangement that would grant the US greater access to its market. However, it's unclear if India will accept the terms, as they could prove difficult for New Delhi to agree to.

Trump also set an August 1 deadline for concluding trade deals with several countries, including India. If a deal is not reached by then, the US may impose tariffs of up to 35% on Indian imports. The President's comments come amid ongoing tensions over international trade and foreign policy, particularly concerning energy imports from Russia.

In a separate development, Trump issued a stark warning to countries, including India, that are purchasing energy from Russia. He threatened to impose a 100% tariff on Russian energy imports unless Russian President Vladimir Putin agrees to a peace deal with Ukraine within the next 50 days. The proposed tariffs are part of a broader effort to cut off funding to Russia and press countries to support efforts to end the war.

Meanwhile, US Republican Senator John Thune announced plans to delay a bill that would impose a 500% tariff on Russian energy imports. Trump, however, suggested that such legislation may not be necessary, as he could use executive powers to address the situation.

Emphasizing the importance of US market access, Trump also highlighted the role of tariffs in securing vital resources from other countries. He pointed to successful deals with countries like Indonesia that ensure the US has access to critical materials, such as copper and rare earth minerals, which are crucial for a variety of industries.
