Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan Sign Trilateral Rail Agreement
Jul 18, 2025
In a major step toward strengthening regional connectivity, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan have signed a trilateral agreement to construct a 640-kilometer railway line linking Central and South Asia. The agreement was formalized by Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Works, Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Transport, and Pakistan’s Ministry of Railways.
The proposed rail line will begin at the Uzbek border at Hairatan, pass through the Afghan capital Kabul and the eastern province of Logar, and enter Pakistan through the Kharlachi crossing in the Kurram district. The project aims to provide landlocked Central Asian states with direct access to Pakistan’s seaports, thereby enhancing regional trade and economic integration.
In a statement, Afghanistan’s Foreign Ministry hailed the agreement as a critical step in unlocking the region's economic potential. Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that the railway project is expected to promote regional stability, economic growth, and development through improved trade and transit links.
The three countries reaffirmed their commitment to close cooperation for the successful implementation of the project, and to further explore opportunities for broader trans-regional connectivity initiatives.
The railway is anticipated to play a transformative role in boosting trade between Central and South Asia, while also contributing to peace-building and development in Afghanistan by creating infrastructure and transit revenue opportunities.
