Nagaland to Conduct Urban Local Bodies (ULB) Elections on June 26


Nagaland will go to Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections tomorrow. This will be the first ever municipal elections in the state with 33 per cent reservation for women. The last ULB election was held in 2004 without the reservation of seats for women. 

Over 2.23 lakh voters will decide the fate of 523 candidates contesting in 214 wards from three municipalities and 21 town councils.

Out of the total electors, one lakh 10 thousand 115 are male and one lakh 13 thousand 521 are female.

Polling will take place from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM through ballot paper voting across 420 polling stations.  Counting of votes and declaration of results will take place on 29th of June.

While a total of 222 female candidates, 198 are contesting tomorrow as 24 contenders had already been elected unopposed. A total of 325 male candidates are also in fray.  Also, 64 candidates had already been elected unopposed.

The youngest female candidate at 22 years of age is contesting from Bhandari Ward-1, while the oldest is from Peren Ward-6 at 71 years.

Among male candidates, the youngest is aged 25 years from Tseminyu Ward-5, and the oldest is aged 81 years from Chozuba Ward-5.

Meanwhile, all 14 town councils under Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation areas comprising of six districts of Nagaland are abstaining from participating in this election. They had also abstained from participating in the recently held parliamentary elections.

Additionally, prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC have been imposed in Chümoukedima, Dimapur, Niuland, and Peren districts in view of the elections.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has appealed all eligible voters to cast their vote. In a social media post, he said, ULBs are crucial as they provide a platform for citizens’ participation in urban management, and development of the towns and cities. The Chief Minister extended his best wishes for a peaceful and successful polling day.
