Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate India’s first bio-ethanol plant at the Numaligarh Refinery in Assam’s Golaghat district, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday.
Describing the development as a major milestone for Assam’s industrial growth, CM Sarma stated, “Ushering in a dawn of industrial development in Assam. Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji will visit Numaligarh to dedicate the nation’s first Bio Ethanol plant.” The announcement was made through a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Although the Chief Minister did not confirm the exact date of the Prime Minister’s visit, he had earlier indicated that PM Modi would be in Assam on September 8, to inaugurate the year-long birth centenary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika, the legendary musician and cultural icon of the Northeast.
In preparation for the Prime Minister’s visit, CM Sarma visited the Numaligarh Refinery site on Monday to assess the progress of the project. He conducted a review meeting with officials of Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), along with ministers, Members of Parliament, and MLAs.
During the visit, Sarma took stock of the ongoing construction of the bamboo-based ethanol plant as well as the broader expansion plans of the Numaligarh Refinery.
The bio-ethanol plant is expected to play a key role in promoting green energy and sustainable development in the region. It is part of a larger national initiative to produce alternative fuels using renewable sources such as bamboo, which is abundantly available in the Northeast.
The inauguration is anticipated to mark a significant step forward in both the industrial and environmental landscape of the state, aligning with India's push for cleaner energy alternatives and rural economic development.
