India hold slim lead after England fight back in opening test of Anderson-Tendulkar trophy

The opening Test of the inaugural Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy remains delicately poised after three days of competitive cricket at Headingley. India ended Day 3 at 31 for 1 in their second innings, holding a narrow lead of 37 runs over hosts England.
After resuming their first innings at 359 for 3, India posted a formidable 471, thanks to a fluent 147 from opener Shubman Gill and a dynamic 134 by wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant. Both batters played pivotal roles in pushing India past the 450 mark, despite a disciplined English bowling attack on a placid surface.
In response, England showed commendable resilience, getting bowled out for 465 — just six runs short of India’s total. Middle-order batsman Ollie Pope led the charge with a well-crafted 106, while Harry Brook fell agonisingly short of a century, dismissed for 99. The Indian bowlers toiled hard, with wickets shared among the attack but none able to dominate.
With a slender advantage, India began their second innings cautiously but lost an early wicket, finishing the day on 31 for 1. The match is finely balanced heading into Day 4, with both sides eyeing a decisive advantage.
The Headingley crowd has been treated to high-quality cricket so far, and with two full days remaining, a gripping finish appears likely in this historic first edition of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
