Sensex Jumps 603 Points, Ending 5-Day Losing Streak


The domestic benchmark indices today ended on a positive note, snapping their five-day losing streak. The BSE Sensex jumped 603 points, or 0.76 per cent, to close at 80,005, while the NSE Nifty advanced 158 points, or 0.65 per cent, to settle at 24,339.

The broader market at Bombay Stock Exchange ended with gains. The Mid-Cap index added over half per cent and the Small-Cap index rose more than one per cent. In the Sensex index, 24 out of 30 companies ended in positive territory. In the top gainers, ICICI Bank climbed nearly three per cent, Adani Ports gained 2.8 per cent and JSW Steel added more than two and a half per cent. Conversely, in the laggards, Axis Bank shed 1.4 per cent, Kotak Bank lost over one per cent, and Tech Mahindra fell 0.7 per cent.

In Sectoral Indices at the BSE, 17 out of 20 sectors logged gains. In the top gainers, Commodities added over 1.7 per cent, Realty increased 1.4 per cent and Telecommunication and Healthcare, both gained over 1.3 per cent. In the top laggards, Services declined over one per cent, Energy slipped over 0.3 per cent, while Capital Goods ended nearly flat.

The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive as shares of 2,579 companies advanced 1,412 declined and 162 remained unchanged.  At the National Stock Exchange, 28 companies hit their 23-week high while 129 hit their 52-week low.
