Shefali Jariwala, best known for her breakout performance in the iconic 2002 music video Kaanta Laga, passed away late Friday night in Mumbai. She was 42.
According to reports, Jariwala suffered a sudden cardiac arrest at her residence in Andheri. She was rushed to Bellevue Multispeciality Hospital by her husband Parag Tyagi and three others, but was declared dead on arrival by hospital staff. The Mumbai Police were informed around 1 AM on Saturday and later confirmed that her body was sent to Cooper Hospital for postmortem examination.
Authorities have stated that the exact cause of death remains unconfirmed, pending the autopsy report. However, initial indications suggest a sudden cardiac arrest. Jariwala had a known history of epilepsy, which experts say can, in rare cases, be linked to sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), though no official link has been established in her case.
Shefali Jariwala rose to national fame with the release of Kaanta Laga in 2002, a music video that became a cultural phenomenon. Often referred to as the "Kaanta Laga girl," she went on to appear in films such as Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, and participated in popular television shows like Nach Baliye and Bigg Boss 13.
Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment industry. Singer Mika Singh, television actor Aly Goni, and actress Divyanka Tripathi, among others, expressed shock and grief over her untimely demise.
Just months before her death, in an interview, Shefali had stated, "I want to be known as the 'Kaanta Laga' girl till the day I die." Her words now resonate deeply with her fans and colleagues, many of whom continue to celebrate her contribution to Indian pop culture.
Jariwala is survived by her husband, actor Parag Tyagi. The final rites are expected to be held after the completion of legal and medical formalities.
