Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the establishment of the state’s first Tea Auction Centre here at Agartala Gurkhabasti and said that the tea trade in Tripura will get a big facelift soon.

“Tea produced in Tripura had to go to West Bengal for auctions till now and was often sold under other brands, owing to which the tea sector was not getting its fair share of benefits despite the recent manifold rise in acceptance for Tripura tea,” Dr Saha said, adding that the auction centre will ease the tea producers get global market to sell their teas.

The Chief Minister said that the present government of the state has taken various plans for the development of the tea industry. The salary allowance of tea workers has been increased to Rs 176 per day. The present government has arranged land for the tea workers. So far 2877 workers have been distributed with patta land, he said.

“A brand and logo for Tripura tea were adopted in 2018 and tea from the state has been sold since then as Tripureswari Tea. Tea garden workers can avail of benefits under different centrally sponsored schemes. The government has decided to give 2 ganda land to all tea garden workers,” he said.
