Union MoS Pratima Bhoumik receives cargo truck carrying goods on trial run from B’desh for NE states

The Union Minister of State (Mos) for Social Justice and Empowerment Pratima Bhoumik received the truck carrying consignment of goods on trial run from Kolkata via Mongla sea port of neighboring Bangladesh on Wednesday in Srimantapur Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Sonamura.

Bhoumik accompanied by the state industry and commerce minister Santana Chakma received the consignments and flagged off the truck, which later departed for Silchar from Sonamura Sriamantapur ICP.

Addressing the event at Srimantapur on Wednesday, the Union MoS Pratima Bhoumik said that with the increase in transportation of goods through Srimantapur ICP more avenues of income generation will open up in near future.

“Government of India has allocated money for the development of Mongla and Chittagong ports,” she said, adding that at present only 25 types of goods from the state are exported to Bangladesh through this Srimantpur ICP. She hoped that the number of exported goods can be increased to 50 in the coming days.

The Union Minister of State said that due to the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India's relations with neighboring countries as well as with various countries of the world have been strengthened.

Speaking at the event, Industry and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma said that the Center and the state governments are jointly working towards strengthening relations with neighboring Bangladesh. As a result, trade between the two countries will increase and income will be generated, she said.

An agreement has already been signed between India and Bangladesh for the transportation of goods to the North Eastern states of the country using Bangladesh's Chittagong and Mongla ports. The first trial run was completed on July 23, 2020 as per the agreement to resolve any issues in the transportation of goods on this road. The second trial run began on August 5, 2022 from Kolkata.
