Sensex falls 425 points, Nifty drops 117 as markets extend losing streak


The benchmark domestic equity indices on Friday ended the week’s last trading session with losses of over half a percent, extending their downslide to the fourth consecutive session. The 30-share index at the Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex, declined 425 points to close at 75,311. Similarly, the National Stock Exchange Nifty-50 dropped 117 points to settle at 22,796. The broader market indices at the BSE ended in negative territory.

The Mid-Cap index shed over 1.1 percent, and the Small-Cap index fell over 0.4 percent. In the Sensex index, 21 out of 30 companies logged losses. Among the top laggards, Mahindra and Mahindra tumbled six percent, Adani Ports slipped over two and a half percent, and Tata Motors fell over 2.4 percent. Conversely, among the top gainers, Tata Steel surged over 1.8 percent, Larsen and Toubro rose 1.1 percent, and HCL Tech gained over 0.7 percent.

In sectoral indices at the BSE, except for metals, which added 1.23 percent, all other sectors logged losses. Among the top laggards, Auto lost 2.6 percent, Healthcare slipped 1.6 percent, and Consumer Discretionary fell almost one and a half percent. Meanwhile, overall market breadth at the BSE was negative as shares of 2,246 companies declined, 1,701 advanced, and 113 remained unchanged. At the National Stock Exchange, 23 companies hit their 52-week high, while 91 hit their 52-week low.
