Rescue operations at Silkyara Tunnel in progress; 41 workers remain trapped


Rescue operations at the Silkyara Tunnel in Uttarkashi are in progress where 41 workers remain trapped. Addressing media in New Delhi, Member, of National Disaster Management  Authority Lt.General Syed Ata Hasnain said that the rescue team has reached 45 meters of the tunnel under the ongoing rescue operation.

He informed that earlier due to some obstacles the rescue operation was affected and which was overcome by the work of engineers. He added that if all goes well then it is expected that the rescue operation will complete within a couple of days. He also informed that food, fruits, water and medicines have been delivered through a dedicated pipeline.

Talking about the arrangements made post-evacuation of those trapped, Lt Gen Ata Hasnain said that required medical facilities have been made available where all will be medically examined.

He informed that a total of 41 ambulances have been kept ready and those found in serious condition, will be airlifted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rishikesh in Uttarakhand for better treatment and others by road to the hospital.
