Agartala, July 18: In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves across the Teliamura region, a 75-year-old man named Manmohan Sarkar was fatally struck by a train on Friday morning near the Maiganga area under the Teliamura Police Station. According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred at approximately 8:00 AM when Sarkar was hit by a DEMU passenger train traveling from Agartala to Karimganj. Although the exact cause of the accident remains uncertain, it is suspected that the elderly man was attempting to cross the railway track—possibly on his way home—when he was struck by the oncoming train.
What has further intensified public grief is the alleged negligence by railway police, who reportedly arrived at the scene more than two hours after the accident. Despite the location being only 1.5 to 2 kilometers from the nearest railway station, the mutilated body of the victim lay unattended on the tracks, causing severe disruption to train services, including the Agartala-bound trains, which were temporarily halted.
“The spot has seen several similar accidents in recent years, yet authorities have failed to take any corrective action. There are no warning signs, barricades, or patrols,” said one local resident. Eventually, railway police arrived at the scene and recovered the body, which was then taken to Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital for post-mortem examination.
