Appointment of contractual staff in election duty invites criticism in Gomati district

At a time when the Election Commission of India (ECI) had objected appointment of contractual staff and volunteers in the process of the ensuing Lok Sabha election, the District Election Officer (DEO) of Gomati District of the state Tarit Kanti Chakma is found to have appointed a major number of contractual staff as presiding and polling officer in Udaipur subdivision.

The order of appointment signed by the DEO Tarit Kanti Chakma on March 19 had invited widespread criticism in the district.

Announcing the poll schedule, the Commissioner of the ECI Rajib Kumar in his press conference on March 16 last said, “No volunteers or contractual staff shall be engaged in the election process this year. There has been a report that many states have been engaging volunteers and contractual staff.”

The Additional Chief Electoral Officer of the State Election Commission S Bandopadhyay agreed to the issue and told our correspondent that earlier some contractual staff were appointed for election duty in Gomati district, but later the order was withdrawn.

“The appointment order was withdrawn and a fresh appointment would be made very shortly. The matter was also discussed with the CEO and the DM,” he said on Sunday evening over telephonic conversation.
